What Astragalus Does for Your Skin

The Chinese herb, known as Radix Astragali (“Astragalus Root”) in Western herbal medicine, produces many types of natural products. Among them, the main active ingredients are their antioxidant flavonoids and a group of sterol derivatives, called astragalosides. Currently, one of the most fruitful research areas for Radix Astragali has the potential shown by astragalosides to reduce aging.

One of astragaloside, astragaloside IV, gives a substance called cycloastragenol.

This molecule provides a protective effect for the chromosomes during cell multiplication. This effect is currently the basis of one of the hottest topics in anti-aging research. In fact, pharmaceutical companies are in a hurry to discover synthetic analogs with cycloastragenol, which can be patented as anti-aging medications.

Three recent studies on cycloastragenol already indicate their potential health benefits.

A study from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine showed how cycloastragenol can suppress the formation of new fat cells. This activity may be astragalus root health benefits for the treatment of obesity. This role supports the use of Radix Astragali as an oral supplement.

Two other studies focus on the metabolism of skin cells. Research from the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong has shown that cycloastragenol can stimulate a key anti-aging enzyme known from human keratinocytes. Keratinocytes are the most common cells in our skin, which make up approximately 90% of their outer layer. Keratinocyte-stimulating metabolism provides a foundation for healthy and shiny skin.

Finally, scientists at the Faculty of Oriental Medicine at Kyung Hee University in South Korea have demonstrated the potential of Radix Astragali extracts to protect the skin from the damage caused by ultraviolet light. Caring for that harmful radiation is that it accelerates aging and can even cause DNA damage and subsequent skin cancer.

In a study from South Korea, Radix Astragali extracts stopped the loss of collagen in fibroblasts that were exposed to ultraviolet light. It was found that the extracts inhibit an enzyme called collagenase, which destroys or stops the formation of collagen.

Collagen is essential for healthy skin, as it is the main structural protein that holds skin cells together. Ultraviolet light causes its destruction, and extracts from the root of the talus prevent this destruction.

These recent studies are beginning to show how modern research confirms ancient knowledge of the astrological root. This herb is definitely one of the most valuable ingredients for the natural care of the skin. Health benefits of astragalus are especially beneficial in combination with other herbal ingredients that are also known to be good for skin health.
